What IS kink: A short history

Kink is defined as being non-conventional sexual practices, concepts, or fantasies by everyday society. To most people kink is an umbrella term for being sexually explorative, and/or having fetishes.

Let us start at the beginning, kink is not new, kink has always been a part of our society since the beginning of human sexuality. The earliest and most obvious kink example would be during the Roman Empire….you guessed it… orgies!

Romans were known for their debauchery and lust in their society and religion. We are talking about a culture filled with exhibitionists, voyeurs, and the primal need for sex and pleasure. Roman art was filled with naked bodies, appreciating the human form. They worshipped Bacchus who was known as the god of wine and debauchery, overall sounds like a fun time!

Who enjoys watching passionate and intense embraces? Of course, as time goes on the Roman Empire grows and shrinks, and soon Britannia raises up and becomes a focal point for Western society.

Kink does not stop there, for the Victorian era brings new kinks to the table. Discipline, corsets, and brothels... O my! Have you ever been excited about the prospect of being spanked? During the Victorian era, discipline was at its peak, and punishment was dealt with swiftly for those who refused to listen. Spankings were doled out, confinement for those who were naughty, and rules stacked by those in charge. Corsets were worn by the masses, accentuating tiny waists, busts, and large hips. Does that sound familiar?

Let us not forget brothels, where societies’ kinks and debauchery were attempted to be hidden. A place where the exhibitionists and voyeurs flocked for their kinks and women would act out fantasies. Kink isn’t only hundreds of years in the past, but in our modern society too.

The 1950’s and 60’s, the age of pin-ups, lingerie, and Betty Page. The emphasized tiny waist is not only in fashion, but lingerie has been added to the line-up. Women were to be seen as prim and proper until the bedroom doors closed, and then the vixens come out. Betty Page was the iconic pin-up vixen, dressed in a bra, garter belt, panties, thigh-high stockings, and heels. Her image has influenced some of the most famous modern pin-ups; such as Dita Von Tease. Pin-ups accentuate the female figure while teasing viewers.

We can see how dressing up in lingerie, and wearing can drive someone wild with anticipation. Kinks that were hidden in the past are still relevant today, and the increasing commonality of kink in various media outlets has created mass awareness and acceptance on a large scale.

Accept your kinks and release yourself from the fear or shame of being different. There’s no longer a need to hide, whip out that dildo, stock the drawers with surprises, and expand your mind with everything you’ve craved before!
